Introduction

One of the things that drew me into playing Pokémon games was the prospect of building Pokédexes by trading between different versions of games. I came across a graphic on Reddit that was hard to wrap my head around as a new player, but it seemed like a really exciting challenge. The graphic itself is missing a lot of information, and some of the information is actually incorrect, so I wanted to create a more complete and accurate guide here to building a living dex (or simply completing the National Dex) in the generation three Game Boy Advance games.

Here are some notes on organization. I grouped Pokémon together by family, since the real challenge is simply acquiring one member of a family and then using the breeding system to flesh out each species line. This means that some of the Pokémon appear out of National Dex order since there are intergenerational evolutions. I use some shortcuts to describe the games to save space: the "Kanto titles" are Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen. The "Hoenn titles" are Pokémon Ruby, Pokémon Sapphire, and Pokémon Emerald. If I write "all Game Boy Advance titles," I am referring to all five of these collectively. If I write "all generation three titles," I am referring to these five and both GameCube titles (Colosseum and XD). I relied on both Pokémon Database and Serebii.net for information about where to acquire each Pokémon. Please write to me using the feedback form if you see mistakes. I will give you credit here if you desire.

As the original poster of the above linked graphic writes, the minimum games that must be completed to create a full generation three National Pokédex are Pokémon LeafGreen, Pokémon Emerald, Pokémon Colosseum, and Pokémon XD. You should restart LeafGreen and Emerald twice to obtain all of the Kanto and Hoenn starters. You will also need to restart those to obtain both sets of fossil Pokémon. You will need two full playthroughs of Emerald to obtain both Eon Pokémon, unless you have an e-Reader and an Eon Ticket. All the rest of the Pokémon can be obtained by purifying the shadow versions in the two GameCube titles and sending them to the Game Boy Advance titles where their families can be fully bred. The alternative is to play all five Game Boy Advance titles, including three playthroughs of Emerald to obtain all three Johto starters and an extra Kanto playthrough for the third Johto legendary dog. Kanto Pokémon [001-151]

Bulbasaur can be received as a starter in both Kanto titles. Only one Kanto starter can be received in each save file.
Ivysaur can be evolved by reaching Level 16.
Venusaur can be evolved by reaching Level 32.

Charmander can be received as a starter in both Kanto titles. Only one Kanto starter can be received in each save file.
Charmeleon can be evolved by reaching Level 16.
Charizard can be evolved by reaching Level 36.

Squirtle can be received as a starter in both Kanto titles. Only one Kanto starter can be received in each save file.
Wartortle can be evolved by reaching Level 16.
Blastoise can be evolved by reaching Level 36.

Caterpie can be captured in both Kanto titles.
Metapod can be captured in both Kanto titles or evolved by reaching Level 7.
Butterfree can be captured in Pokémon XD or evolved by reaching Level 10.

Scizor can be captured in a Japanese copy of Pokémon Colosseum with an e-Reader accessory or evolved by trading Scyther holding a Metal Coat.

Jynx can be received in a trade in both Kanto titles or evolved by leveling a Smoochum with high Friendship.
Smoochum can be hatched from a Jynx egg.

Electabuzz can be captured in Pokémon FireRed or Pokémon XD or evolved by leveling an Elekid with high Friendship.
Elekid can be hatched from an Electabuzz egg or received in a trade in Pokémon XD.

Magmar can be captured in Pokémon LeafGreen or Pokémon XD or evolved by leveling a Magby with high Friendship.
Magby can be hatched from a Magmar egg.

Espeon is one of two starters in Pokémon Colosseum. It can also be evolved in the Hoenn titles by leveling an Eevee with high Friendship during the day time or in Pokémon XD by leveling an Eevee while carrying the Sun Shard key item.
Umbreon is one of two starters in Pokémon Colosseum. It can also be evolved in the Hoenn titles by leveling an Eevee with high Friendship during the night time or in Pokémon XD by leveling an Eevee while carrying the Moon Shard key item.
Note that only a single Sun Shard or Moon Shard are available in each XD save file and that the Hoenn titles need working batteries to make day and night cycle.

Porygon can be received in both Kanto titles.
Porygon2 can be evolved by trading Porygon while holding an Upgrade.

Omanyte can be revived in both Kanto titles, but only one of the two fossil Pokémon can be acquired in each save file.
Omastar can be evolved by reaching Level 40.

Kabuto can be revived in both Kanto titles, but only one of the two fossil Pokémon can be acquired in each save file.
Kabutops can be evolved by reaching Level 40.

Aerodactyl can be revived in both Kanto titles.

Snorlax can be captured in both Kanto titles and Pokémon XD.

Articuno can be captured in both Kanto titles and Pokémon XD.

Zapdos can be captured in both Kanto titles and Pokémon XD.

Moltres can be captured in both Kanto titles and Pokémon XD.

Dratini can be captured in both Kanto titles.
Dragonair can be captured in both Kanto titles or evolved by reaching Level 30.

Hitmonlee can be captured in Pokémon XD, received as a gift in either Kanto title, or evolved from a Tyrogue by reaching Level 20 with a higher attack stat than a defense stat.
Hitmonchan can be captured in Pokémon XD, received as a gift in either Kanto title, or evolved from a Tyrogue by reaching Level 20 with a higher defense stat than an attack stat.
Hitmontop can be captured in Pokémon Colosseum or evolved from a Tyrogue by reaching Level 20 with equal attack and defense stats.
Note that Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan cannot both be received in one Kanto playthrough. Only one may be selected as a gift on each save file.

Miltank can be captured in Pokémon Emerald or Pokémon Colosseum.

Raikou can be captured in both Kanto remakes and Pokémon Colosseum. Each Kanto remake save file can have one roaming Johto dog. Raikou will be the roamer if the chosen starter was Squirtle. Please note that if you make Raikou faint, you will no longer be able to encounter it.

Entei can be captured in both Kanto remakes and Pokémon Colosseum. Each Kanto remake save file can have one roaming Johto dog. Entei will be the roamer if the chosen starter was Bulbasaur. Please note that if you make Entei faint, you will no longer be able to encounter it.

Suicune can be captured in both Kanto remakes and Pokémon Colosseum. Each Kanto remake save file can have one roaming Johto dog. Suicune will be the roamer if the chosen starter was Charmander. Please note that if you make Suicune faint, you will no longer be able to encounter it.

Larvitar can be captured in both Kanto remakes or received in a trade in Pokémon XD.
Pupitar can be evolved by reaching Level 30.
Tyranitar can be captured in Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD or evolved by reaching Level 55.

Lugia can only be captured in Pokémon XD.

Ho-oh can only be received in Pokémon Colosseum after purifying every shadow Pokémon and completing the 100-trainer challenge in Battle Mode using a story mode team.

Celebi can be received by Japanese editions of generation three Game Boy Advance titles from a copy of the Japanese Pokémon Colosseum bonus disc. The player must first purify every shadow Pokémon on the main game disc and have that save file present on an inserted memory card while the bonus disc is running. A total of 49 different Celebi can be received (one to the Colosseum game and 48 to unique Game Boy Advance save files).

Hoenn Pokémon [252-386]

Treecko can be received as a starter in all three Hoenn titles. Only one Hoenn starter can be received in each save file.
Grovyle can be evolved by reaching Level 16.
Sceptile can be evolved by reaching Level 36.

Torchic can be received as a starter in all three Hoenn titles. Only one Hoenn starter can be received in each save file.
Combusken can be evolved by reaching Level 16.
Blaziken can be evolved by reaching Level 36.

Mudkip can be received as a starter in all three Hoenn titles. Only one Hoenn starter can be received in each save file.
Marshtomp can be evolved by reaching Level 16.
Swampert can be evolved by reaching Level 36.

Poochyena can be captured in all three Hoenn titles and Pokémon XD.
Mightyena can be captured in Pokémon Emerald or evolved by reaching Level 18.

Zigzagoon can be captured in all three Hoenn titles.
Linoone can be captured in captured in all three Hoenn titles or evolved by reaching Level 20.

Wurmple can be captured in all three Hoenn titles.
Silcoon can be captured in captured in all three Hoenn titles or evolved by reaching Level 7.
